The Heritage

The School
Tenshin Shōden
Katori Shintō-ryū

Founded by Iizasa Choisai Ieano in 1447, this school is one of the oldest Koryū (古流) in Japan.
Classified as an intangible cultural property of Chiba prefecture, it preserves the art of combat, strategy, and spirituality uninterruptedly.

Recognized by the Nihon Kobudo Kyoukai, it is at the root of many modern martial arts such as kendo, iaido, and aikido.

Associated with the Katori Jingu Shinto shrine, where demonstrations are held during festivals like the Jinkosai, and where the founder's tomb is located.
